The Bight

Writer's picture: CazCaz

As I was going through my photo albums on my computer, I came upon this one photo, this one I didn't lose, I lost others like it, so this one is special.

I have such fond memories of this place.

This photo was taken on the edge of Australia, part of the Great Australian Bight, situated 75kms away from the Western Australian border.

We travelled the road across to Perth at least twice a month, once we did the trek to Perth from Brisbane 3 times in a row, that was a bit much!!!

This area had a big truck parking bay in which you could pull up and sleep or have a good look around, we slept in this bay often, I can still hear the noises and feel the breeze, it is the one place that still invades my memories constantly, one day somehow I will get back there.

Imagine being behind the wheel of a big rig since 6am, with allotted breaks its now say 10-10.30pm and this is where you pull up.

It would be my job to get out of my seat, step into the back of the bunks, pull all the things off the beds, while Wayne filled out the log book, I can still memorise exactly what I had to do every night.

Then we would turn in, we each had our own bed and window, we'd open them and immediately you could hear howling wind, and the faint roar of the ocean, the breeze would glide over your face and then you'd be lost in it's grasp.

In the morning before we'd take off, we would head over to the edge and have a look, we couldn't do that every trip of course, but when it did happen it was a magic experience, one I will never forget!
